Reiki
The Usui System of Natural Healing

A Brief Description
Reiki is an ancient healing art using non-manipulative and non-invasive touch. In certain circumstances Reiki may be transmitted without direct touch. It is a Japanese word-phrase, pronounced RAY KEY. Rei means universal or all-encompassing and Ki means life-organizing principle. Reiki as a form of energy work was discovered in the late nineteenth century by Dr. Mikao Usui following many years of study and search.

Reiki has been known to:

  • Reduce pain and stress
  • Stimulate the immune system
  • Profoundly relax and comfort
  • Be effective for days and even weeks post-session
  • Amplify innate abilities
  • Support all other forms of healing arts including pharmacological and herbal, therapy, surgery, self-awareness and life-style changes
  • Empowers each person to care for his/her self
  • Promotes homeostasis at all levels of being
  • Assists in the natural cleansing and eliminative processes
  • Alleviates “negative” emotional reactions
  • Lessen intrusive thoughts
  • Promote appropriate relational interactions

Reiki does not interfere with free will. It does not affect any aspect of one’s being without consent and a willingness to engage in self-examination.

The original Reiki ideals in an inscription on Mount Kurama, Japan, “Usui Sensei’s Secret Virtue”

The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases~
Just for today do not be angry
Do not worry, be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people…

Learn Reiki!
If you are already engaged in the healing arts Reiki can be an invaluable addition to your repertoire particularly if you want to improve your powers of intuition and insight. If you want to begin a healing arts practice Reiki is an important and invaluable place to start. Wanting to take care or yourself and your family and friends is reason enough to learn the priceless art of Reiki. Classes are taught by Robin in the traditional format brought from Japan by Madame Takata. They are:

  1. Reiki I: about 10 hours over two consecutive days in three attunements.
  2. Reiki II: about 15 hours over three consecutive days in at least three attunements, depending on Reiki I experience.
  3. Reiki III or Masters Degree: There are two options. A) Learn the traditions of the Masters Level without the intent/ability to teach Reiki. B) Learn all of the traditions of Reiki III in order to teach it. The number of attunements and time to learn depends on which option is chosen and prior Reiki experience.

A Short History of Reiki
Paraphrased by Robin Phillips from the inscription on Mount Kurama, Japan.

Mikao Usui was born August 15, 1864 in Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture. He was a talented and diligent student and traveled to China and several Western countries to study. He ran into some misfortune later in life and went to Mount Kurama on a 21 day retreat to fast and meditate. At the end of the retreat, he felt the great Reiki energy enter at the top of his head. He first used Reiki on himself, and then began giving Reiki to his family. Since it worked so well for such a wide variety of complaints, he decided to share his knowledge with the public.

He opened a Reiki Center on April 11, 1921 in Tokyo tending to many people and teaching many workshops. On September 12, 1923 a devastating earthquake shook Tokyo. Thousands of people were killed or injured or became ill in the aftermath. Dr. Usui brought Reiki into the overwhelmed and ravaged city and used its healing power on the survivors. His Reiki Center soon grew too small to accommodate the needs of the area so he built a new one outside Tokyo in Nagano in February 1925.

Usui was a very warm, simple and humble person. He was active and healthy, always ready to smile and was very courageous in the face of adversity. He was, at the same time, a cautious person. He liked to read and his knowledge of medicine, psychology, theology and metaphysics was vast. This lifelong habit of studying and gathering information helped to prepare Usui for receiving and understanding Reiki.

Mikao Usui married Sadako Suzuki and they had two children. Their son, Fuji, assumed responsibility for the family business following his father’s death.

More than 2,000 people learned Reiki from Dr. Usui and his senior students taught and carried Reiki even further. His became renowned throughout Japan and received travel invitations to apply Reiki and teach. During his stay in Fukuyama, he died of a stroke March 8, 1926. He was 62.

One of Usui’s Reiki teachers met and ministered to a seriously ill American woman of Japanese descent, Hiwayo Takata. After daily Reiki sessions over several months she recovered enough health to return to her home and family in Hawaii. It took all of her persuasive powers a few years later to convince the Japanese Reiki Masters (all male) to teach her, an American, Reiki. Madame Takata brought Reiki to the U.S. where it has since diversified and grown.

Four-in-a-Row
A Reiki tradition suggests in order to create an opportunity to change my life I schedule and receive a Reiki session, in person, for four consecutive days. The effects of this are as varied as the people receiving Reiki. It is a deeply personal experience which has adjusted and healed attitudes, relationships, and provided insightfulness into troublesome situations. No difficulty is so complex, no pain so great Reiki can’t improve.

Whether you want to receive Reiki, learn Reiki or both, Robin’s personal and professional experience, her education and her compassion make her a skillful practitioner and master teacher.
